W

Just came back from the screening of ‘W’, the George W. Bush satire / biopic, where Oliver Stone was in attendance and conducted a QnA post show.

The show was insightful, somewhat alien in terms of the Singaporean context but yet at the same time vaguely familiar. Familiar because over the past decade we’ve been subject to regurgitation of news from the American-centric perspective.

Mr. Stone was intelligent, articulate and opinionated. He shared his views on the Bush administration. The QnA was one of the best I have attended, and was the highlight of the evening.

I can’t help but think what will be the Singapore equivalent? How will filmmakers in Singapore ever get the freedom to create a film like ‘W’? Especially with the recent passing of the Public Order Act and amendments that were made to the Films Act.

This is why despite all efforts, Singapore will never produce our Oliver Stone, we are never allowed to think as freely as he does, or speak up as surely as he has about what we truly care for – our people and our nation.
