Synopsis:

A man (Lim Yu Beng) and a boy (Loo Zihan) struggle with their mutual sexual desire, all the more because it seems to be a transgression, an anomaly compared to the banal normality of the domestic family unit they try to fit into and live in. The boy’s mother (Goh Guat Kian) festers in her own depression and rage while the boy and man attempt to reach out to each other.

Director’s Statement:

SOLOS is the cumilation of several projects I have embarked on over the past few years. I wasn’t aware that all these pieces of the puzzle fitted together till i started conceptualizing for this feature.

Pre production for SOLOS started in December 2005, Principal Photography was done in June 2006. Editing it however, took close to a year. SOLOS has evolved over the course of the whole production period. What remained was the essence of the characters and the aesthetic which was defined from the very beginning.

I was very fortunate to be able to work with veteran actors like Yu-Beng and Guat Kian, i have always admired their acting. They were my ‘ideal cast’ from the very beginning and part of the reason i fought so hard for this film was because of their commitment to the project. I have learnt so much from working with them, and will be indebted to them, especially Guat Kian - who entrusted her feature film debut to a young filmmaker.

Quotes & Reviews:

The already daring scenario of a male schoolteacher in love with one of his boy students breaks further conventions with rich formal experimentation in Kan Lume and Loo Zihan’s silent indie film,”SOLOS”. Yanked from a premiere slot in the Singapore festival when state authorities demanded severe cuts of sexual content, gorgeous pic has gone on to a healthy fest launch at Pusan and AFI, with best long-term niche prospects as a gay/art vid curio.

- Robert Koehler, Variety

A dialogue-free and nearly black-and-white film about an affair between a teacher and his student, plus the student’s mother’s despair of losing emotional connection to her son, all presented in a series of one-shot, one-scene takes à la Mizoguchi …… The most striking aspect is the extremely subtle use of color and black-and-white fading into each other that expresses the moods of desire, pleasure, jealousy, betrayal, and disappointment perhaps better than anything else.

- Rowena Aquino, Asia Pacific Arts Magazine

The algebra of cliché holds that a picture is worth a thousand words, but it never fits silence into the equation. In SOLOS, co-directors Loo Zihan and Kan Lume have succeeded at the seemingly impossible task of creating a film that exists in the moments between conversations.

The wonderful cast weaves its way through a stark, washed-out world, but we see brief flashes of full color that almost sear the eyes with their vibrancy. One imagines that if these characters ever spoke, their words would hit our ears, and our hearts, with the same force. Censored in its native Singapore, SOLOS is a film that will challenge anyone with romantic notions of what on-screen love looks like.

- Jon Korn, AFI Fest

    Hi,

I came across your website whilst aimlessly traversing the www blackhole and after the trailer of Solos, i somehow found my way back to my books ><

Im wondering if there would be a screening of Solos in Singapore as id like to watch it :)

  2. loozihan Says:

Hello, thanks for your interest. Currently there are no planned screenings in Singapore, i don’t think there will be in the near future too, the best bet i guess is to wait for the foreign DVD release mid next year. Sorry for the bad news but that’s the censorship system for you… :)

  3. haled Says:

Responsibility to the conservative mainstream. The old withering uncle making censorship decisions has to think about his grandsons too. We need a generational wipeout for there to be true liberalisation of the arts.’ :( In the meantime, we shall wallow in oppression perhaps?

Ever thought of having an underground screening or is it against the law to have that. I trust my short attention span to forget about “Solos” by mid next year. I wouldnt be in Singapore either then. ..

  4. loozihan Says:

its against the law, maybe that’s what the country wants you to do? Forget about the movie? :) then it would have triumphed. Sigh, perhaps its good that you are leaving then.

  5. kel Says:

actually if it is against the law, why some porn vids are able to thrive through illegal downloads?

it’s strange, but it is. i suggest tt u can have a screening thru clicking on a link for anyone interested to watch, but it should be a limited viewing, say 50 hits. ;-)

  6. loozihan Says:

I’m not sure why, perhaps that’s a question for the authorities.

Thanks for your suggestion, promotion and distribution matters i leave to the producers, they are the professionals in their areas after all. But i will let her know.

  7. 过客 Says:

It was kind of weird to know about you through the various media as a result of your full nudity in filming “Happy Factory” and subsequently chance upon your wensite. Coincidentally, same timing as the Parliament debates of repealing Penal Code 377A. I never fancy local productions like “I Not Stupid”, “Money no Enough”, “我在政府部门的子” and the most recent “881″ or is it”883″, and the like .. But “Happy Factory” caught my attention and I look forward to watching the movie. Local production has always been criticised as low budget production and bounded by teh strict rules & regulations imposed by, not only MDA, also the Censorship Board. Looking at your various short productions, do they need to pass through Censorship Board? How do you know if it’s not legal even if it is merely an academic project of yours? I look forward to public response of the movie after it starts to screen in theatre …. Meanhwile, if we are interested to view your other movies, like “Solos”, where can we access it?

  8. loozihan Says:

Do approach Pleasure Factory with an open mind, it is really not what the media has sensationalised it to be.

Yes, all productions have to be passed by the censorship board to obtain a rating before it can be screened for the public. Basically, from my understanding, the government doesn’t censor the production of a film, but they do restrict the exhibition of the film through censorship.

Thank you for your interest. Solos should be available as an International DVD release next July. It should also be touring around several festivals in the region. Will keep you updated through this blog.

  9. Gary Says:

Heard a lot of bad comments from those who watched PLeasure Factory. I’ve yet to watch but will watch soon. Some even gave 0 star out of 5. From what i’ve heard, Quoted ” it’s a low budget movie with bad quality filming which even a normal video camera can film. The camera angles were just IFFY… the dolly, panning all… the plot was confusing(not even abstract), scenes cut to another scene too much and fast.

Music is almost non existant. This is just a feedback for improvement. Putting negative views aside, I think the acting was alright.
and there’s quite a bunch of cuties too heh”

  10. loozihan Says:

As i said do approach the movie with an open mind :) People are entitled to their own opinions and everyone’s preferences may be different, do watch it and let me know what you think :)

  11. Mathew007 Says:

I have seen the pleasure factory,is a good movie, the story tell us hw the prostitute exchange their body for a living. For the nudity , not many actor in hongkong/singapore willing to do it in public…a lot of your friends said you are darling to shown ur body in front of public….I do not thk I will do that…ha..ha,…I thk shy ma…….I remember the bugis street, also have nudity…..scene…keep up ur good work….

  12. Eriz8080 Says:

    Hi Zihan,

Just catch the PLeasure factory today and i really applaud u for yr courage to go nude in front of all people & for the sake of art…if i have such an opportunity i would do so too…haha..well, storyline really reflect the feel and meaning of geylang and the feeling that not too much people know abt…well..well done dude…Do keep up the good work…

  13. Gary Says:

    Hey Loo,

just watched the movie today with my cousin. To be frank, it’s really a bad movie. Everything seems not right. Filming keep on shaking, too little dialoged, too dragging. Seriously, i watching this movie because of you. You look rather, in fact, CUTE and naive. Nice bods toned and tanned. Love it when you stripped! But a few parts of you jerking and gay sex scene are censored. If you have an original version, i would like to borrow from you.
Everyone in the cinema can’t wait for the movie to end.
Originally, i would’ve gave 0 out of 5. Bacause of you as a leading actor which act some spice to the movie, i’ll rate it 2 out of 5.
Keep it up. I hope to see more films from you… :) I’d recommend my PLUs friends to watch it.

  14. loozihan Says:

To Matthew and Eriz thanks for your comments :)

To Gary: I think brian has his reasons for choosing that style of shooting and editing. I guess its just different preferences for different people :) But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I don’t have the original version unfortunately :)

  15. 过客 Says:

Do you have to learn how to act before learning how to direct or vice-versa? If you know how to act, does that make you a better Director and vice versa? I see that in “Solos”, you direct and act. I only know Jackie Chan and 张庭坚 do that, and the former always does that … Most Directors are Directors and mot Actors/Actresses are just Actors/Actresses …

You have tried both, which one you prefer? To direct or to act?

  16. keegan Says:

    Hi Zihan

Keep up the good work.. Rome wasnt built in a day.. just look at tony Leung.. he is great… but he suffered so much to reach where he is today.. perservere in ur passion.. behind u , dude

    keegan

  17. Mathew007 Says:

Lust caution full verion will release on the cinema on 8 Nov 2007….
This is the tactic to earn the profit in 2 ways….

Even tony leung such a big star do not mind to act such movie….

  18. Gary Says:

Hi Zihan, anymore movies coming up soon???
Would love to watch you acting.

  19. loozihan Says:

To Traveller: I think learning how an actor functions definitely helps you direct more intelligently, but whether it makes you a good director or not, that i can’t really say for sure. I definitely am looking to direct more.

    To Keegan: thank you

To Matt: Although i would hate to support the distributors who decided to submit the NC16 version for 1st theatrical release, i would have to say i would definitely be watching the uncut version on the 8th.

to Gary: Yes, movies coming soon, but short films mainly and more school work, no acting and no major projects in the pipeline

  20. Maaboo Says:

I saw the US Premiere last night at the AFI Film Fest at Hollywood, CA i love this film i want to see it again. its a great movie

  21. Dan Says:

  22. McGarmott Says:

Hey man, I’m a Malaysian film student who just graduated from Hollywood (my film school’s just right across the street from the Arclight, in fact). Was hoping to catch it just so that I can meet with a S’porean filmmaker and re-use the Manglish accent - but I only caught the film today and was sorry to hear that you’ve gone home (for exams!?). Not easy, since I have to volunteer as well as catching all those films I wanted to see (yours is no. 10). Can’t say I understood your film - it’s (speaking very broadly, so don’t take this perjoratively) very much in the style of the M’sian/S’porean indie arthouse trademark style of long one-takes of an entire scene, usually with a static camera. I shall be very Malaysian and ask, what is it that you’re trying to say with the film? Or are you gonna be one of those difficult guys who say, ‘well, what do you think?’ (The director of “4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days”, Cristian Mungiu has a tendency to do that, for example.)

  23. loozihan Says:

Maaboo - thanks from dropping the note :)

Dan - thanks for the interview! i tuned in online that morning to listen to it :) Drop me a line if you do come to Singapore anytime in the future, can show you ard.

McGarmott - Haha yes, unfortunately i am back for school and exams… just reached SG. Yes i guess i am going to do a “Christian Mungiu” and ask “what do you think?”. I guess what i mean to say is that its too much to type, and if i could say what i wanted to say in words i won’t have to make a film about it. Maybe if ever we do get a chance to meet we can sit and discuss about it, would love to hear what you think about it.

Thanks for coming to support the movie though, and P.S. 4 mths 3 weeks 2 days is a fantastic film, it still is the best film i’ve seen in PUSAN.

  24. Jeff Says:

    Hi Zihan,
    this is jeff…
I feel that your works is rather unique, I begin to like them. The first production of yours that I watch in threatre is, pleasure factory. I feel that though there are some comments from the media about the production and the ratings, I personally feel that overall, the film did let me view the characters in different angles and glad to say, I begin to like your films and hope to see more of your production.

I feel that critics can be unfair to film makers, but I guess, you have win my heart to purchase the ticket to watch your film. Seriously, I do hope to have a chance to meet you in person or even able to be invited to view your latest film, Solos or your other production

keep up the good work and the passion. I understand the restrictions of film makers…but I hope my words will be a form of encouragement from a fan and a audience.

  25. McGarmott Says:

I also thought Mungiu’s film was one of the best I saw when I was in Telluride back in Sept. But there was also Blind Mountain - did you manage to catch that at AFI? Just as devastating.

  26. jeff Says:

    Hi zihan…
I feel that your film are really great..keep up the good works!
I really hope to meet u in person..and to view your film…as you inspired me a lot…!
    Jia you!

  27. loozihan Says:

MG: No i didn’t manage to catch Blind Mountain, but will keep an eye out for it :)

Jeff: Thank you, which films have you seen?

  28. Mathew007 Says:

    Hi Loo,

    why my message have deleted?

  29. loozihan Says:

which one were you referring to matt?

  30. jeff Says:

    Hi zihan…
the first film i watch is pleasure factory..
I feel that it is presented in a different film angle to understand your film..
I seldom watch local film.most of the time is becos of a fren will pull me along but i chose to watch pleasure factory becos I don trust the rating that is given..and just wanna give local film a chance to impress me…and it did…
Jia you! hope your film will be known to more ppl..and be awarded for your hardwork …
    I hope to watch solos…in s’pore…

  31. Mathew007 Says:

    Hi Loo,

The message deleted of I asking if I can join you watching Lust caution…worry reporter follow….ha..ha..ha..Lust caution I have watch NC16 AND RA21,
They censored important parts really make a lot of different of the film..

No wonder Tony GF jealous……Do you dare to act role of Tony leung in this show…HA HA..HA….?

  32. loozihan Says:

  35. Ben Says:

    Hi Zihan,

Where can i buy the international dvd for Pleasure Factory and Solos? Let me know yea.

  36. loozihan Says:

You can preorder the DVD for Pleasure Factory from this website:

    http://www.strandreleasing.com/product_Details.asp_Q_id_E_292

The international release date is on July 8th :)

SOLOS DVD is still in the midst of preparation, i know its been a long time, we are preparing several exciting bonus features to include in it….. so i promise you it will be worth the wait.

    Thanks for your interest!

  37. Ben Says:

    Hi Zihan,

For the international DVD, issit still under the censorship of Singapore? Or it is uncensored copy.

Singapore censorship can be overly done and the whole flavour of the movie is gone after it is censored. Malaysia is probably worse.

  38. loozihan Says:

The DVD is released by an American company, it would be rated according to Americn standards. :)

    Hope this answers your question

    Cheers
    Zihan

  39. Sal Says:

Just to let you know that what’s banned in your home country is now making waves in the GLBT circuit in Shanghai and Beijing. I hope yesasia.com will start sale of this film soon. You did well, my boy! :)

  40. loozihan Says:

    Thank you Sal :)
