Sophia Raffles as a historical figure:
SOPHIA RAFFLES is the wife of the founder of Singapore, Sir Stamford Raffles. She wrote Sir Stamford Raffles’ Memoirs posthumously and fought to get them published. Four of her five children perished in South East Asia, falling victim to cholera and dysentery. Her last child was sent back to England but passed away at the age of 18. I was drawn to her both as a historical figure and as a woman who has to maintain her sanity in face of immense personal loss.
